MSRTC to Install AI-Powered Cameras at Swargate ST Stand

In a decisive response to a troubling incident at the Swargate ST stand on February 26, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) is taking significant steps to enhance security by installing advanced AI-based facial recognition cameras at this bustling transport hub.

The shocking accident that occurred on that fateful day ignited widespread public outrage and raised critical concerns about safety at the Swargate ST stand, one of Maharashtra’s busiest transport terminals.

In light of this, the Pune division of MSRTC has announced plans to deploy between 15 and 20 cutting-edge AI-powered cameras capable of facial recognition and suspicious activity detection. These cameras will be strategically placed across entry, exit, and waiting areas, complementing the existing conventional CCTV systems to create a comprehensive security framework.

Arun Siya, the MSRTC Pune Divisional Controller, emphasized, “Passenger safety remains our foremost priority, and we are committed to implementing urgent measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

We have successfully completed the tender process for these AI-driven cameras, which will empower us to identify individuals with criminal backgrounds and alert security teams in real-time.

Every vital area of the Swargate ST stand will be under vigilant watch, ensuring no blind spots exist. Our mission is to cultivate a secure environment where every traveler, especially women, feels safe and protected while using our services.”

Siya further highlighted that the MSRTC is collaborating closely with the Pune police to maintain constant patrols and heighten vigilance, particularly during the late hours. Plans are also underway to deploy specially trained security personnel who will monitor the camera feeds and respond swiftly to any alerts generated by the AI system.

Aparna Kudale, a frequent passenger, shared her anxiety, stating, “What happened at Swargate was nothing short of horrifying. I often arrive late at night, and learning about such a brutal crime in what should be a safe public space has severely shaken my confidence in MSRTC buses.

Nevertheless, I welcome the move to install AI-based cameras. If these technologies can truly detect suspicious individuals and promptly alert the authorities, it will undoubtedly make a monumental difference. As a woman, the knowledge that technology is being harnessed to protect us provides a measure of reassurance.

I sincerely hope these ideals find their way into action quickly and do not languish as mere plans on paper.” In the early hours of February 26, a woman victim faced an accident in an ST bus parked near the Swargate depot, sending shockwaves throughout the state.

The perpetrator, Dattatray Gade, was later identified through CCTV footage and is known to be a serial offender with a history of criminal activity. His ability to access the bus undetected has raised serious questions about the existing security protocols in place at this critical transport node.
